69TH SKÅL WORLD CONGRESS - TAIPEI 12-17 OCTOBER 2008
Skål International has just completed the final inspection visit in respect of the 69th Skål World Congress which will be held in Taipei, Taiwan from 12-17 October 2008. We are very happy with the progress which the Local Organising Committee has made and the congress promises to be a very interesting one. Registrations are coming in every day and the headquarters hotel, the Grand Hyatt is now full. There is plenty of space at the other congress hotels. The Sheraton Taipei has just completed refurbishment at a cost of US$77 million. The first class hotels, the Howard Plaza right in the centre of the shopping district with its beautiful rosewood and the Grand Hotel which overlooks the Taipei basin and has typical Chinese architecture are also ready to welcome you. The official carriers, China Airlines (not to be confused with Air China) and Eva Air are offering very attractive discounts. Please click on the following hyperlink for full details of the Congress, including the airline discounts: http://www.skal.org/congresos/taipei2008/taipei08.asp?idioma=I
The Tourism Forum will be held on the morning of Wednesday 15 October 2008. The speaker is Bert Van Walbeek who is an expert on crisis management and the title of his lecture will be “Expect the Unexpected” Bert’s lectures are not only to the point and informative but are also delivered with humour. All congress participants are welcome.
The Business to Business (B2B)
Session will be held immediately after the Tourism Forum. A table and four chairs will be available, free of charge, to all participating countries and extra tables and chairs will be available at €50.00 per set. Lap top connections will also be available at a cost of €50.00. The B2B session which will continue as long as necessary will give buyers and sellers ample opportunity to do business among friends. Now is the time for you to talk to your tourism authority and see if it would like you to help them bring extra business into your country. Use the form at the following hyperlink to register for the B2B workshop. . http://skal.ctdli.net/des/bus2bus.php?idioma=I

Taipei Congress Update – Tours
There are a number of pre- and post-tours available, again the details are on the website www.skal.org go to Congresses or click on the following hyperlink http://www.skal.org/congresos/taipei2008/I/tours.pdf
The following is some extra information on the pre- and post-tours. When you come to Taiwan for the 69th World Congress of Skål International, you will, of course, have a chance to see some of Taipei and its surrounding attractions during the tours that are included in the official congress programme. You will see at least one of the temples that are such vibrant manifestations of the ancient Chinese religions which are still very much alive in Taiwan and at least one of the night markets that are such a strong focus of frenetic shopping and snacking for the local people. You will see some of the spectacular scenery of the mountains that surround the city. And you will see some of the special attractions for which Taiwan is justly famous - tea growing and consumption, hot mineral springs, pottery making, and more.
Taipei, however, is only a small part of this fascinating island and we hope that you will take at least one of the optional tours to experience more of its many attractions. Just visit the Skål website, or read the April 2008 issue of the Skål News, to find out what pre- and post-tours are available.
One of the tours takes you to the east coast of Taiwan, and the spectacular Taroko Gorge. The gorge is the centrepiece of the Taroko National Park and is truly one of the natural wonders of the world with vertical marble cliffs rising thousands of feet from the green Luwu River. The road that has been carved out of the walls (almost entirely by hand), suspended between the river below and the mountain heights above, is a marvel of engineering. Visit the Taroko Gorge for an experience you will never forget.
Another tour focuses on Sun Moon Lake, a romantic body of blue water surrounded by verdant mountains in the centre of Taiwan. This is the island’s most popular honeymoon destination. It is the traditional homeland of the tiny Thao aboriginal tribe, which inhabits Ita Thao Village on the lakeshore. You will tour the lake by boat, visit the floating fields that surround Lalu Island in the lake’s centre (abode of the Thao ancestral spirits), and view lakeside temples and a stately pagoda. As an added bonus this tour takes you to the old town of Lugang, a repository of ancient culture and handicrafts.
Another optional tour takes in both Lugang and the Wufeng Earthquake Museum. This latter attraction commemorates a disastrous earthquake that struck central Taiwan on 21 September 1999, killing more than 2,000 people and toppling buildings over a wide swath of the island. Here you will learn about the awesome power of this force of nature, and the grievous damage it can inflict.
If you have time, you can choose the five-day, four-night Amazing Taiwan tour. This trip takes you first to Sun Moon Lake and then proceeds south to Tainan, Taiwan’s ancient capital (and seat of government when the Dutch occupied the island in the 17th century). Here you will see some of Taiwan’s most interesting temples and other historic sites before continuing on to Foguangshan (Light of Buddha Mountain) near Kaohsiung, where you can meditate with the monastery’s monks. Then you will travel around the southern highway to the east coast and the hot springs of Zhiben. Finally, you will visit Taroko Gorge before returning to Taipei.
These tours, of course, can show you only a small part of what Taiwan has to offer. If there is anything else you would particularly like to see, any experience you would particularly like to enjoy, then please contact the Organising Committee who will do their best to assure that your stay is as pleasurable as possible.

The annual golf tournament will also be held on Thursday 16 October 2008. Informatino on place, tee times and price will be posted on the website shortly.

INVITATION TO ALL MEMBERS TO JOIN
Vice President, Hulya Aslantas extends an invitation to all members to join the “Think Tank” on Sustainable Development in Tourism.
Dear Skålleagues,
In line with our responsibilities and commitment to the environment, we would like to invite you all to work together in further developing Skål ’s involvement in “Sustainable Development in Tourism”.
Since 2002 we have been involved with this subject with our “Ecotourism Awards” and President Litsa Papathanassi last year chose as her theme “Sustainable Development in Tourism” and marked it with the above logo.
We strongly believe that this subject is an ongoing concern for the world and more specifically for our profession and should be a major topic on our agenda at all times. It is our duty to keep the world alert and create further awareness and help to educate communities, even governmental bodies in our respective countries.
With this mission in mind, a “THINK TANK” working group with Past President Litsa Papathanassi and me together with Andrew Wood, Francisco Muñoz, Jack Sofier, Thomas Vincent, Chairperson of the Council Sustainable Development In Tourism Committee and committee members, Gustavo Paez, Andrew Jones, Andres Arcos and Keith Murcott has been set up to develop the idea further, evaluate latest developments on the subject and work on a new page for the Skål website to bring together all related material/publications, announcements, related links, and of course all relevant information on our Ecotourism Awards programme. The page is under construction, but you can already see the topics we have gathered so far at the following hyperlink:
http://www.skal.org/sustainable/index.html
Having 20,000 members in around 90 Countries, imagine the wealth of information we can bring together and from there, once we learn to think together, how many important projects we can handle, let alone the awareness we can create in our respective communities using this information.
You will hear more from us on the subject, but this is to inform you about this new working group. Please let us have your valuable input, any related information, comments, questions should be sent to: vp1@skal.org
With Best Regards & Skål
Hulya Aslantas

PEOPLE
GORDON SIMS:
We send our sincere condolences to the President of Skål International, Philip Sims on the recent death of his brother, Gordon, following a short illness.
RAY BOGAERT: Membre d’Honneur Ray Bogaert passed away in London on 5 May 2008 in his 90th year. Ray had been in ill health for some time. We send our sincere condolences to Lynn. The following is a personal reflection of Ray Bogaert compiled by Bill Pullen who worked with Ray and Lynn in the Savoy Hotel London:
With the sad passing of Ray Bogaert on the morning of Monday, May 5th 2008, we can rightfully say, “it was the end of an era”. He was an hotelier of truly exceptional standing as well as being an international tourism professional of the highest quality, appropriately recognized many years ago as a Membre d’Honneur of Skål International. He was a long time member of Skål International London, a Past club President, a Past U.K. National President and served for many years as Auditor for Skål International. Skål was indeed a very important part of his personal and professional life.
I first heard the name “Ray Bogaert” during my apprenticeship years in the hotel business in 1959 when I was a reception clerk at The Berkeley Hotel on London’s Piccadilly and he was one of the company’s most respected executives. The Berkeley was one of the four premium London hotels owned and operated by The Savoy Hotel Company, which included Claridges, The Connaught and the prestigious Savoy Hotel elegantly situated between The Strand and The Embankment overlooking the River Thames. In those days, The Savoy did not have a ‘Sales and Marketing’ department as we know today. Then, the Savoy’s “sales” efforts were strictly dedicated to exemplary guest service at a level rarely seen today even among the world’s finest hostelries.
Ray played many roles as he dutifully represented the Savoy Hotel Company’s signature properties in the heart of London’s West End and was an outstanding ambassador of London’s hospitality industry. In days when transatlantic crossings were a popular form of transportation between America and Europe, Ray frequently travelled to France to meet the transatlantic icons of the ‘Queen Elizabeth’, the ‘Queen Mary’, the ‘S.S. United States’ and others stopping in Cherburg and Le Havre, boarding them and personally greeting guests on their way to stay at the company hotels. He coordinated all their needs from the time they disembarked in Southampton, were met by hotel representatives at Victoria Station in London to the moment they entered their rooms and suites at the hotels. He personally greeted royalty, heads of state and celebrities from all walks of life and it is indeed sad that he never related his many priceless experiences in a book that would surely have been an industry best seller.
My first introduction to The Savoy was in 1954 when, as a hotel school college student I was assigned to the hotel as an intern for about 12 weeks as part of our college curriculum. I worked in the Audit Office on restaurant control verifying the various sales transactions in the Savoy’s main restaurant and reported to the office manager’s secretary, a delightful lady by the name of ‘ Lynn’. Imagine my joyful surprise twenty years later when my wife and I were standing in line at London’s Heathrow Airport preparing to board our ‘plane to Berlin to attend the 1979 AISC World Congress, when I noticed the baggage tags on the luggage belonging to the couple standing in front of us. “Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bogaert”. Lynn, to whom I had reported in 1959, twenty years earlier, was now Mrs. Ray Bogaert and I finally got to meet Ray Bogaert himself, in person.
We have maintained our friendship directly and through SKÅL these last 29 years and, those who knew Ray will agree, he was a raconteur without equal with a wonderful sense of humour. Ray and Lynn have lived in Windsor, just west of London, for many years and are quite close to Windsor Castle where the Queen frequently resides. One of Ray’s favourite tongue-in-cheek remarks concerning their very prestigious neighbour is to refer to her affectionately as “ ‘er down the road”. I am sure many of our English Skålleagues have heard him make this remark!
Ray Bogaert was born on April 13, 1919 and turned 89 years old just three weeks before he passed away. He has two brothers, Leon and Armand “Bill” Bogaert. Bill and his wife, Ann, live in Seminole in the St. Petersburg area on the west coast of Florida. Ray was truly one of my idols in this industry, a man loved, admired, respected but never to be forgotten. May he always rest in peace with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his lips.

Past President SIUSA (1989 – 1990)
GWEN KELLOUGH:
We have been advised that the death has taken place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada of Gwen Kellough, wife of the late Al Kellough, former International Councillor of Canada, after a short illness. Gwen was well known particularly to many of the International Councillors.
WORLD TOURISM DAY 2008

Following the successful World Tourism Day 2007 theme ‘Tourism Opens Doors for Women’, the General Assembly underscored the importance of World Tourism Day (WTD) to be conceived as a year long campaign to raise awareness on the positive role of tourism in sustainable socio-economic development.
WTD 2008 will be hosted in Peru on 27 September. ‘Tourism Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change’ is the theme this year.
We shall be providing you with information throughout the year to support this campaign. As an initial step you may wish to consider incorporating the theme as well as the logo (attached) into your own media and promotional activities.
For further details on the World Tourism Day campaign, please see: http://www.unwto.org/wtd/index.php
